매력적인 아날로그 감성을 묘사할 때.
독특하고 진기한 느낌.

 

 

• "quaint country cottages"
• "This is so quaint" (이국적인 발리 숙소를 묘사하면서)
• "As I walked through the quaint shop, I felt as though I was transported back in time."

Insider

a person within a group or organization, especially someone privy to information unavailable to others.

 

한국에서 쓰는 "인싸"랑 뜻이 좀 다름.
단순히 조직에서 인기있는 것이 아닌,
남들이 모르는 정보를 알고 있는 "내부자"를 가리킴.

 

 

• Political insiders say that she is planning to run for president.
• The book gives fans an insider's view of Hollywood.
• "She's the insider to all the hottest parties."

Insider threat

An insider threat is a malicious threat to an organization that comes from people within the organization who have inside information concerning the organization's security practices, data and computer systems.

 

한국 말로는 내부자 위협. 
조직의 임직원이 회사나 정보 통신(IT) 시스템에 보안상 위협을 가하는 행위라고 한다.

Pristine

in its original condition; unspoiled.
clean and fresh as if new; spotless.

 

오염되지 않고 깨끗한 것을 묘사할 때.

자연 환경 같은 눈에 보이는 깨끗함이든 추상적인 깨끗함이든
모두 이걸로 표현이 가능하다.

또는 훼손되지 않은 원래의 모습도 pristine이라고 한다.

근데 이것보다는 깨끗함을 표현할 때 더 많이 쓰임.

 

 

• My office is a mess but her office is always pristine.
• "The water is so pristine." (발리 섬의 깨끗한 바다를 보면서)
• My uncle’s antique car is pristine and has all its original parts.

Contemplate

to spend time considering a possible future action,
or to consider one particular thing for a long time in a serious and quiet way.

 

생각을 하는데, 좀 깊은 생각에 빠질 때.

주로 고민을 할 때 많이 쓰임.

멍 때리면서 뭘 보고 있을 때도 contemplate라고
하지만, 이건 글에서 쓰이거나 거의 안 쓰임.

 

 

• He contemplated the meaning of the poem for a long time.
• "I'm contemplating if I want to stay in this dress or should quickly change into a different outfit." (어떤 옷 입어야할지 고민할 때)
• I'm contemplating going abroad for a year.

This is ironic.

 

Ironic

interesting, strange, or funny
because of being very different from what you would usually expect

 

'되게 아이러니하다', 라는 말처럼
예상했던 것에서 빗나가는 느낌을 받아
의아하고 신기하다.

 

 

• It is ironic that although many items are now cheaper to make, fewer people can afford to buy them.
• It’s really ironic that I would be asked to write about pets today because just yesterday our dog ran away.
• "Ironic how it's called the Devil's Tear when I really, truly believe that this is a gift that God has given us." (Devil's Tear라는 아름다운 해변절벽을 보며)

Picturesque

(especially of a place) attractive in appearance,
especially in an old-fashioned way

 

어떤 장소나 환경을 보고
'그림같다' 라고 말하고 싶을 때 쓰면 된다.
저 고양이는 '그림같이 예쁘게 나오는 중이다옹'
이라고 하는 거임.

 

 

• the picturesque narrow streets of the old city
• This part of the town is especially picturesque.
• It was a pretty town with a picturesque harbour and well-preserved buildings.

Home goods

equipment, tools, machines, and other things used in a house

 

인테리어 소품/용품. 

Household goods 가 더 formal한 단어지만
캐주얼하게는 just Home goods.

미국 인테리어 용품 브랜드 "Home Goods"도 있음.

 

 

• "I love buying home goods while I'm traveling."
• Home Goods is usually my second stop when decorating a space in our home.
• Congregating in parks or shopping for home goods is not OK, he emphasized, urging people to exercise “common sense.” (코로나 기간 동안 자가격리를 해야한다고 강조할 때)

Selection

the act of choosing someone or something

 

한국에서 셀렉션 이라고도 하는 것 같은데,

풀어보면 "선택된 것, 엄선된 것" 이라고도 할 수 있겠다.

브랜드 매장에서 판매하는

옷이나 각종 아이템 등에 쓸 수도 있고,

물건을 모아서 갖다놓으면 그게 바로 셀렉션.

원래 의미로는 무엇을 선택하다이다.

 

 

• "Wow, I'm already impressed with all the selections. So excited." (인테리어 매장 안을 둘러보며)
• Most schools would have a good selection of these books in their libraries.
• The coach made her selection (= chose who she wanted) for the team.

Wide awake

fully awake

 

완전히 깨어있음.

눈을 크게 뜨고 깨어있는 느낌이라

Wide awake임.

뭔가 자고 싶은데 자기 어려울 때 주로 쓰임. (지금 나)

 

 

• "This ride is 2 and a half hours and I'm wide awake." (차 타고 가는 시간이 길어서 자야하는데 잠이 안 올 때)
• I could not relax and still felt wide awake.

미국에서 하는

대놓고 fat camp라고 하면 너무 직설적이라
weight loss camp 라고도 한다.
